African Tribal Art - Dogon Altar Statuette

This African Dogon statuette is anchored in a circular base. Although the arms are absent, the shoulders are narrow and well defined. A hand rests on a slender bust, decorated with irregular reliefs. A crest accentuates the blurred features of the head, while a labret is discreetly drawn on the chin. An incision reveals a female sex. In African art, this type of sculpture was linked to an individual cult and decorated the Dogon family altar. Its patina is black and grainy, showing abrasions. Generally sculpted on order of a family, Dogon statues can also be venerated by the entire community. Their exact function remains unclear, however. Alongside Islam, Dogon religious rites revolve around four main cults: the Lébé, linked to fertility and led by the Hogon, the Wagem, which honors the ancestors under the leadership of the patriarch, the Binou, which calls upon the spirit world and is led by the priest of the Binou, and the society of masks, in connection with funerals.
