England, 18th century
Wood, glass, sand and wax
H. 20.2 cm, diameter 9.5 cm
(restoration)
Hourglass consisting of a two-bulb flask in lightly tinted bubble glass, combined with a wax seal and two circular wooden bases held together by four wooden rods forming columns - one of the discs is marked with the intermingled initials DT, DA, DT in black ink.
It runs for one hour.
On board, by combining the number of times an hourglass had been turned over with the speed information transmitted by the log, it was possible as early as the 15th century to estimate a ship's position at sea.
