The baluster shaft decorated with three rams' heads, the circular base with a frieze of water leaves and gadroons.
Claude Galle, delivered two pairs of candlesticks of the same model to the Palace of Fontainebleau in 1805. Referenced on July 15, 1805, it is described: "two pairs of candlesticks with bronzed balusters and chiseled gilded rams' heads" (National Archives 02 665 d1, page 82). In 1807, a pair of similar candlesticks was in the bedroom of the Queen of Naples and remained in place throughout the First Empire.
This large pair of Claude Galle candlesticks is illustrated, described and referenced in the work of Jean Pierre Samoyault "catalogue des bronzes d'ameublement entras à Fontainebleau pendant le premier Empire", on page 187.
Also illustrated in: Dumonthier, Bronzes d'éclairement et d'ameublement..., plate n°36.
Original gilding and faded green patina (the only color referenced for this model).
