"Edouard Paillet (1859-1925) Cat Nursing Her Kittens"
The moving subject of a cat nursing her three kittens. The mastery of drawing, the play of light and shadow and the use of pure white which makes the cats stand out and detach them from the darker decor made in a range of gray and brown. The work is done in oil on canvas, it is offered in a modern gilded frame which measures 42.5 cm by 50.5 cm and 27 cm by 35 cm for the canvas alone. Signed lower right, the work is much more beautiful in reality than in the photo because it is difficult to photograph due to the classic chiaroscuro technique. A charmer for lovers of 19th century animal paintings.
A student of Jérôme, Edouard Paillet is a specialist in portraiture and so-called genre painting (clowns, monks, tramps, animals, etc.) Having come to Provence in 1891, Paillet settled with Alfred Casile at 7, quai du canal in Marseille.
