Object description :

"Large Pewter Cimarre - Joinville, 18th Century"
ALL MY PRICES INCLUDE SHIPPING FOR METROPOLITAN FRANCE

****************************************

Large pewter CIMARRE in the shape of a baluster with a high pedestal, a molded flared throat, a moving lid with a spinning top and a two-seed thumb; it has a fixed handle and a swinging ogee with cherub head attachments.
Hallmarking on the lid and on the outside bottom:
1°- control mark: crowned C / IONUIL / 1717.
2°- Unidentified master's mark: crowned lily / two stars / NRL
Height: 30 cm.
JOINVILLE, Between 1717 and 1721

The control mark listed immediately after is that of 1721, which allows us to limit the dating.
This 1717 control contains two engraving errors on its matrix: the C (meaning common tin) has been reversed and the V of JOINVILLE is here a U. The master, noted on several pieces, still escapes any identification and attribution today.
A forthcoming work on Champagne production currently in preparation will probably put a name to this mark.

Very good condition, a slight fragility at the bottom of the throat at the location of repeated contact with the swinging handle is however noted. These vessels were intended for serving wine at the table
