"Michel Jouenne (1933 – 2021), The Lilacs Of The Garden"
This masterful work by Michel Jouenne, titled Les Lilas du Jardin, presents a lush bouquet of white lilacs, carefully arranged in a terracotta vase.
The flowers occupy a central position and seem to burst beyond the frame, evoking a sense of natural abundance and luxuriant profusion.
The subtly crafted palette is dominated by whites and greens, enhanced with golden hues that harmoniously contrast with the blue-gray background. This intentionally minimalist backdrop highlights the richness and delicacy of the floral composition.
Michel Jouenne's technique is particularly remarkable in this piece. Each petal appears meticulously painted, with his brush loaded with material and vibrating through quick, precise movements. The artist's swift withdrawal of the brush at the end of each stroke creates slight peaks, capturing the distinctive texture of lilacs. These generous impasto strokes give the canvas a sculptural and tactile dimension, allowing the flowers to literally bloom on the surface of the painting.
Beyond technical virtuosity, this work celebrates the beauty and richness of nature. The white and yellow flowers symbolize purity, elegance, and light, while the solid, robust vase contrasts with the duality of strength and fragility.
Michel Jouenne initially studied modeling in the studio of sculptor Muguet before dedicating himself to painting. He worked in the Aix-en-Provence region, following in the footsteps of Cézanne, as well as in Corsica.
Recognized for his talent, he exhibited his works in Parisian salons and at prestigious solo exhibitions, such as at Galerie Guigné and Galerie Alexandre Léadouze in Paris.
Many of his paintings found a home at the Musée Michel Jouenne in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, which in 2020 was replaced by the Fondation Michel Jouenne in Marseille—a space dedicated to preserving and celebrating the legacy of this exceptional artist.
