Rosa Ludmilla Assing was a German writer, biographer, translator, editor, journalist and artist. She also wrote under the pseudonyms Achim Lothar and Talora. Assing contributed to the political events of her time, such as the March Revolution of 1848 and the Italian Risorgimento.
A rebellious and cultured woman, deeply democratic, she left her country because she was sentenced to prison for her writings. She found asylum in Florence, where she continued her work as a journalist and writer, coming into contact with the Italian circles of the Risorgimento and with personalities such as Giuseppe Mazzini.
Assing was also a skilled draughtsman, as her self-portrait from 1850 and the portrait of Gottfried Keller from 1845 further demonstrate.
