"Large Mythological Clock In Gilded Bronze Empire Period Early 19th Century"
Large finely chiseled gilt bronze clock representing "Nyx" goddess of the night standing holding a flaming torch and covering with a starry drape the rays of the sun illuminating the terrestrial globe represented on the back of the dial. White enameled dial indicating the hours and minutes in Roman numerals (light hair). The dial rests on a cylindrical shaft delicately chiseled with cherubs with dragonfly wings representing the wind blowing in different directions. On the left side is a rooster perched on a pedestal alluding to the sunrise. Rectangular base with double evolution finely chiseled with cherubs holding a floral garland on which sits a young woman carrying a basket of flowers, the whole underlined by a frieze of palmettes and water flowers. It rests on four small ball feet chiseled with honeycomb florets and palmettes. Original double patina mercury gilding of remarkable quality in very good condition (cleaned by our workshop, slight wear on the back and sides). Wire movement striking the hours and half hours operating with its key. Empire period work of similar quality to the productions of the great Parisian bronziers of the early 19th century.
