Provenance: Sold at Christie's in 1978, bought by the historian Friedrich Gorissen (1912-1993), director of the Koekkoek Museum.

Heins Burgers (1834-1899) was a student of Jozef Israêls (1824-1911) and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes français. It is true that he essentially adopted the somewhat morbid side of his master, however, he left some very pretty little paintings.
