It dates from the middle of the 19th century -- around 1850 -- and comes from the Volga region of Russia.
Byzantine in style, the work is delicately made on a wooden panel in tempera (egg yolk-based paint) in rich and warm tones. The halos have a very beautiful gilding and the clothes are also richly enhanced with gold.
Superb original condition without restoration -- rare to find in such state of preservation. Minor wear and cracks. Some traces of insects on the back -- now neutralized and having not affected the pictorial layer nor the structural solidity of the panel.
