"Original Etching Depicting A Cat"
This coloured etching is marked "Original Etching - The Cat" and is signed Fare. Arthur Charles Fare was a British artist born in Bath in 1876 and died in 1958. He painted in watercolours and specialised in landscapes, village and harbour scenes and architectural subjects. Initially working as an architect, his views mainly depicted scenes in the Bristol and Bath area, including a record of parts of the city destroyed by bombing. Works such as this one depicting animals are much rarer. He was a member and regular exhibitor at the Royal West of England Academy, showing 106 works between 1922 and 1956. He was also a member of the Bristol Savages, of which he was president in 1927. These were a group of artists who met regularly and painted together in their headquarters, decorated like a Native American wigwam and located on Brandon Hill, Bristol, between 1907 and 1920. He exhibited over 200 works with them between 1928 and 1958, the year of his death. He is known to have visited France and painted in the Dinard area around 1925, and to have also visited Italy and Spain. Fare was a prolific artist and his works were well composed and competently executed, and examples of his paintings can be seen at the Bristol City Art Gallery.
