These 2 groups are treated in the style of the pastorals of the Louis XV period, whether through the characters' clothing or their gestures.
The first group represents a gentleman and a lady sitting side by side, looking at the nest placed on the young woman's knees, in which 2 chicks are nestled. A dog (faithful guardian) is near the young woman who places his right hand on an empty birdcage.
A large leafy tree shelters the 2 lovebirds. The scene is not very formal, the 2 characters being dressed in a fairly free way: loose hair, open shirt for the young man and fairly open throat for his companion.
The 2nd group shows the same characters, this time dressed and coiffed in a more "official" way. Frock coat and ponytail for the young man who is on one knee, proposing to the young woman with her neat hairdo, a scarf around her neck.
Around them, the scene has also changed: a sheep stands in place of the dog and the cage has disappeared.
The Birds (symbolizing love) have since grown up. They are now perched in the branches of the tree sheltering the lovers.
