a spectacular and very realistic terracotta representing a skull placed on a cushion with pompoms, an open book at its side accompanied by a quill and an inkwell, coins thrown randomly all around.
the whole is very realistic and on a scale of 1.
the composition recalls the symbolism of the Flemish and Italian vanities painted during the renaissance but for once it is a terracotta sculpture and not a pictorial one which is much rarer.
this terracotta is of very good quality and the details are superb.
this is the first time that i have come across one of this type.
beautiful work from the end of the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century.
one of the pompoms was restored a long time ago otherwise the condition is perfect.
the cushion is full so note that the weight is substantial.
very beautiful old patina.
a superb sculpture ideal for a cabinet of curiosities.
