Representative of the Baroque, he is among the most important Dutch genre painters of his time. He painted several hundred paintings, of varying quality, but characterized, above all, by knowledge of the human heart, humor and an exuberant use of color. He frequently represents moral values in everyday scenes, using images that are mostly symbolic.
