Large oval serving dish, fine Imari decoration hand-painted in iron red, blue and gold, with flower, foliage and fantastic animal motifs such as dragons. Two signatures below. Our dish is made of Japanese porcelain (Arita) for the European market. Edo period, mid-19th century. With their recognizable decoration with red and blue floral motifs enhanced with gold, Imari porcelain was very successful in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, imported by boatloads from China and Japan. The merchants then sold them as they were or transformed them by embellishing them with beautiful European bronzes gilded with fine gold.
