Etienne-Charles Pointurier (1809-1853) Superb 19th century oil on canvas depicting a snowy landscape Signed and dated lower left 1836 Very good condition Resigned and dedicated on the back of the canvas (to be deciphered) Dimensions: 60 x 84 cm Etienne-Charles Pointurier (1809-1853) He began as a student at the Dole drawing school where he won several prizes that opened the doors to Baron Gros' studio in Paris. The latter entrusted him with the production of several copies including that of the central panel of his painting - The Plague Victims of Jaffa - In 1833, he settled in Arbois and won the competition for drawing teacher at the town's college. In 1834, he taught 54 students including a certain Louis Pasteur. A year later, he was in charge of decorating the chapel at the collegiate church of Dole, and also worked for the publishers of plates of Dole and Besançon to whom he provided numerous topographical drawings of Dole, Arbois and its surroundings. His Arbois workshop then enjoyed real success and brought him real financial ease. He would later be a member of the secret society of the "Bon Cousins Charbonniers" which, at the time, played an important role in the advent of the Republic. (Source: Juramusée)
