The finesse of the trees, the small, very colorful characters and the classical composition with a path through the forest on which small characters walk are the characteristic elements of Philippe Budelot's painting. A student of Lazare Bruandet, Philippe Budelot exhibited between 1791 and 1829 forest views mainly taken from Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Fontainebleau and the surroundings of Paris. In his compositions the characters were often painted by Demay, Swébach or Taunay. He was recognized for his sense of perspective, his finish, the drawing of the woods and the softness of his tones, as well as his work on chiaroscuro.
