Use: inkwell
Region of origin: Japan Period: Meiji period (1867-1912).
Original period object.
The origins of Mikawachi date back to the construction of a kiln by Korean potters brought to this region of Kyushu by landowners who had participated in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign in the Korean peninsula towards the end of the 16th century. This kiln was used to fire porcelain for the Hirado clan before the Meiji Restoration in 1868. In addition to operating the kiln, the Hirado clan discovered ceramic paste in Amakusa and enabled the rapid progress of techniques and skills, still in force today. This type of Hirado Mikawachi porcelain is characterized by its highly saturated cobalt blue painted decoration on white porcelain.
Our inkwell has a very beautiful decoration of birds in flight, foliage and flowers. Highly appreciated by high dignitaries, many Hirado-yaki porcelain objects were offered as tributes to the court and to the families of fighters.
