Anton Hickel is an Austrian painter born in Bohemia. After his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he worked as a painter under the direction of his brother, Joseph Hickel, painter at the Court of Vienna. From 1779, he traveled around Europe, he painted in Germany in Munich, Mainz and Manheim. In 1785 he stayed in Switzerland, then became the official painter of the court of Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor. He settled in France in 1786 where he painted the portraits of Queen Marie-Antoinette as well as the Princess of Lamballe. In 1789, during the Revolution, he emigrated to England where he became a very fashionable portrait painter. He then produced his famous painting representing The House of Commons.
