******************************************

Pewter CUP decorated in relief with bryony leaves and fruits and the words: "Mieux vaut le goubelet que l'espée" (sic).
Clear hallmark of the artist affixed to the outside bottom and counter hallmark "au gibet" affixed three times to the inside bottom.
Model created in 1887.
Height: 11.2 cm.

Contemporary cast of the artist from the end of the 19th century in perfect condition.
The quality of definition of the creations of this artist highlights two necessary conditions, a mold with very fine chiseling and a perfect cast without any reworking after demolding, therefore "raw cast" like the beautiful productions of the 16th and 17th centuries.
On the works of this artist, any mark other than those indicated above (clear mention ETAIN... crowned rose, etc.) indicates a post-mortem edition. Jules Brateau played with his initials by choosing his countermark, in fact phonetically JB is called Gibet...
Bibliography: "Jules Brateau" by Jean-Christophe Boucaud who reproduces this model there.
