Very beautiful daguerreotype of an elegant young woman wearing a madras crinoline dress. The daguerreotype is colorized and the jewelry is enhanced with gold. Handwritten inscription on the reverse: "August 26, 1845, 26 years old, Derussy daguero plate rue des Prouvaires, Mrs. Auguste Thomas, born Marie-Aglaé Briel in 1819, August 15, died January 16, 1903". Format: 9 x 12.5 cm In a 22.5 x 28 cm gilded frame. The white mat is typical of primitive daguerreotypes, black mats will be systematized after 1850. Philippe Derussy is one of the most sought-after daguerreotype portraitists in the capital in the second half of the 1840s. His studio is located on rue des Prouvaires in the Halles district. He led a fairly flourishing activity since in 1847 he declared that he produced 3000 daguerreotype portraits per year. We know that he is the inventor of a process that he calls the "Derussy system". All the portraits are guaranteed to be fixed with gold chloride, which makes them unalterable and full of vigor.
