Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp ( Amsterdam , 1874 – Fiesole , 1950 ).
He is a versatile artist: painter, draftsman, woodcarver , engraver , lithographer , bookbinding designer, explorer, art collector and ethnographer. He still occupies an important place among the artists of the beginning of the century. Nieuwenkamp found inspiration for his work while traveling. He left in 1897, traveling to the East Indian archipelago. He visited the island of Bali six times during his travels. In 1900 he built his magnificent workshop ship De Zwerver, with which he crossed the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany with his family. In 1910 he settled in Edam, in 1920 he left for Italy where he lived until his death.
