"Charles Mellin (nancy 1597 – Rome 1649)"
OIL ON COPPER 16.5 X 21.5 CM. THIS EXTRAORDINARY WORK REPRESENTS SAINT VERONICA IN THE ACT OF WIPING JESUS' FACE DURING HIS ASCENT TO CALVARY. IN THE PAINTING, ALTHOUGH SMALL IN SIZE, ARE 10 CHARACTERS PLUS JESUS, ALL PAINTED WITH ABSOLUTE MASTERY. THE WORK IS EXCELLENTLY PRESERVED AND UNDER WOOD'S LAMP IT APPEARS FUNDAMENTALLY HEALTHY, CERTAINLY WITHIN THE NORMAL RANGE FOR A 400-YEAR-OLD PAINTING. THE AUTHOR, CHARLES MELLIN, ARRIVED IN ITALY AT A YOUNG AGE AND COLLABORATED WITH GREAT ARTISTS INCLUDING SIMON VOUET. HIS WORKS ADORN SEVERAL CHURCHES IN ROME TOGETHER WITH THE FINEST MUSEUMS IN EUROPE, INCLUDING THE LOUVRE.
