"Suspended Mine Compass House Of Engineer Chevalier In Paris"
Mine Compass And Bridges And Roads Engineer Chevallier Paris C. 1840" A fine mine compass in its original case, transport-shaped, worn on the belt. The compass is signed Maison de l'Ingénieur Chevallier Opticien Place du Pont Neuf 15 Paris. The shop moved to 15, place du Pont-Neuf later in 1842. The attribution of this date is based on Chevallier's 1842 catalogue, which provided this address. A notice published in March 1843 reminded the public of the shop's move, suggesting that it may have occurred in late 1842. Chevallier's catalogue indicates that the move was precipitated by the construction of the Palais de Justice which interfered with the former workshop site. JGA Chevallier died on 10 January 1848.
