7 goats appear on the sheet. The composition itself is very harmonious and balanced. The goats are captured in realistic attitudes, with many details. The shadows give depth to the drawings.
The work is signed lower right. It is placed under glass, in a large wooden frame with a golden patina that does justice to this beautiful composition.
The artist
Johann Jakob Biedermann was born in 1763 in Winterthur, in a modest background. He began an apprenticeship in goldsmithing but soon turned to painting. From 1778 he was a pupil of the animal and landscape painter Heinrich Rieter, in Bern. Biedermann excelled in both specialties. Biedermann painted the main cities of Switzerland, and made study trips throughout the country, as well as to Paris and several cities in Germany. He ended his life in Zurich, where he died in 1830.
The Geneva Museum of Art and History, the Kunstmuseum in Winterthur, and the museums in Lausanne and Zurich all have works by Biedermann. Furthermore, Biedermann's works have been the subject of numerous public sales.
