"The Consecration And Stoning Of Saint Stephen XVIII "
Pair of XVIII repoussé copper panels depicting the consecration and martyrdom of Saint Stephen. The artist depicts the martyrdom of St Stephen, a young deacon of the Christian community of Jerusalem, who was condemned to death by stoning following false testimony (New Testament, Acts of the Apostles, 7, 55-60). It depicts the precise moment when, pushed outside the city walls by the hostile crowd, St Stephen is surrounded by his persecutors who are about to throw stones at him. Falling to his knees, he invokes Heaven.
