Portrait of a Navy officer, 18th century, wearing his decorations (probably the Order of Saint Louis), trace of signature near the letter, painting attributed to Hermanus Numan, portrait and landscape painter, draftsman and engraver, born in Ezingue, near Groningen, in 1744, died in Amsterdam on March 9, 1820. A student of Jan Augustin in Haarlem, he went to Paris in 1768 and worked with Le Bas. He painted theater decorations in Amsterdam. The Museums of Brussels, Haarlem and Vienna have works by this artist. The National Museum of Amsterdam has his Portrait of Mrs. Rendorp with her little girl. Oil on relined canvas, restorations.
