"Pair Of Walnut Flour And Salt Boxes. Provence 19th Century."
These two charming boxes: the "fariniero" and the "saliero" were hung in the kitchens of the country houses, along with the panetière (bread), the estanié (tins) and the coustelié (knives). They are curved on three sides and rest on arched feet with scrolls. The lower crosspieces carry a flowered basket; a branch for the pediments. The farinière was used to flour fish by introducing the flour through the guillotine opening, then shaking the box. Its front is carved with two fish tied with a knot and an olive branch. The saliero kept the salt dry; the matches were stored in the small drawer. Its front is finely decorated with a sheaf of wheat joined by a ribbon. Provençal work close to the manufacture of 'maîtresse' furniture.
