Period: 19th century
Dimensions: 34 cm x 29 cm with frame; 14 cm x 21 cm without frame
Technique: Oil on wood panel
This work depicts a lively rural scene with a covered cart in the center. A woman, standing on the porch, leans down to speak with a peasant, while another man, wearing a hat, climbs the stairs in the background. The sky is masterfully painted, with clouds that appear alive and vibrant, creating an evocative and almost tangible atmosphere. The interplay of light and shadow, along with the natural dynamics of the scene, highlights affinities with the Barbizon school, known for its portrayal of rural life and atmospheric landscapes.
Frame: The frame, in gilded wood and pastiglia, shows signs of wear and is contemporary to the painting but requires restoration.
Condition: The painting is in simply good original condition.
Additional notes: On the back of the panel, inscriptions suggest an old attribution to Jules Jacques Veyrassat. There is also a 19th-century label with the number ‘62’ and a partially legible word, possibly referring to an exhibition or a collection.
