Very beautiful etching and burin engraving representing the death of Demosthenes.
Dated 1821.

Engraved by CMF Dien (1), after the painting by F. Boisselier (2), Pensionnaire of the French Academy in Rome.
In a contemporary custom-made frame in gilded wood, called "à canals". Double mat.
"O Neptune, I leave your temple, still alive, so as not to prophane it with my death : But Antipater and the Macedonians have not spared your sanctuary." (Plutarch). Dedicated and presented to Mrs. the Deputies.

(1)Claude Marie François Dien (1787-1865) is a French engraver and painter. He engraved comic card games by Colonel Athalin, but also major works such as Louis XVIII, The Death of Leonardo da Vinci, Saint Augustine, Plato, Virgil, etc.
(2) Félix Boisselier L'Ainé (1776-1811), French painter. Completion and presentation of The Death of Demosthenes in 1805, a neoclassical work now exhibited at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
