Gustave Marchoul (Liège, 1924 - Bray, 2015) is an engraver as well as a painter, author of tapestry cartoons and Belgian publisher. He is considered a major figure in engraving in Belgium in the 20th century. He studied drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Mons, where he received an award for excellence, before discovering engraving as an autodidact. Gustave Marchoul settled with his wife, the painter and engraver Blanche Gillot, in Thuin in 1954. Two years later, he co-founded the Artistes de Thuidinie, a group of artists who are still active. In 1964, he joined the Hainaut Cinq group in this city, composed of Zéphir Busine, Gustave Camus, Roger Dudant and Jean Ransy. He also founded the Cap d'Encre group (1964-1970), whose mission was to disseminate the art of engraving. He became a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Mons and then at the École nationale supérieure de l'Audiovisuel in La Cambre (Brussels) from 1966 to 1989, where he taught engraving and book illustration. He also ran an engraving workshop at the Royal Museum of Mariemont from 1992. Gustave Marchoul has participated in various engraving biennials and triennials and has won international awards, notably in Ljubljana, Lugano, Venice, Florence and Fredrikstad. Also a publisher, Gustave Marchoul created Éditions de la Grippelotte. He became a correspondent (Class of Fine Arts) on January 6, 1983, then a member on April 30, 1992 and finally an emeritus member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium on October 7, 2004.
