"Porcelain Figure Of Cupid As A Blacksmith, Wahliss Teplitz Turn Vienna, Hand-painted And Gilded"

Rare Wahliss Teplitz Turn Vienna porcelain figure of Cupid as a blacksmith, circa 1900

This rare and charming antique porcelain figure was produced by the renowned Wahliss Teplitz-Turn factory in Austria (now Trnovany, Czech Republic) around 1900. Finely modelled and hand-painted, the figure depicts Cupid portrayed as a young blacksmith, standing barefoot by a furnace and anvil, enthusiastically forging, presumably, arrows.

The figure is beautifully detailed, with crisp hand-painting and a naturalistic pose. Cupid’s expressive face, delicate wings, and sculptural apron are finely executed. Elements such as the wings, apron, quiver, and anvil are finished with a soft matt gilding, creating an elegant contrast against the beige-toned body. Additional hand-applied gilded accents outline the contours, giving a sophisticated shimmering effect under light.

The base is stamped with the red shield coat of arms reading “EW, Turn Vienna, Made in Austria” and bears the impressed model number 1391. This mark is associated with Ernst Wahliss, a major figure in Viennese porcelain artistry and the Turn-Teplitz production hub.

This figure reflects the late 19th-century Romantic and Historicist trends popular in Central European porcelain, making it ideal for collectors of antique Vienna porcelain, Ernst Wahliss, or lovers of Art Nouveau and fine Bohemian ceramics.

Historical Background
Ernst Wahliss (1836–1900) was a prominent Viennese retailer and later a major porcelain producer. In 1894, he acquired the Alfred Stellmacher factory in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia, which he developed into a major centre of artistic porcelain production under the name "Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik." Wahliss porcelain is highly sought after today for its artistic quality and fine craftsmanship.
