VERY GOOD CONDITION WAS RESTORED ABOUT THIRTY YEARS AGO, LAST PHOTO BEFORE RESTORATION, THE PLATE IS BEHIND THE BUST. WEIGHING 22 KG FRANÇOIS LIEDOT 1773 -1812 IS A FRENCH SENIOR OFFICER OF THE FIRST EMPIRE CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF OF ENGINEERS IN MOSCOW WAS KILLED DURING THE RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN OF 1812. WANTING TO JOIN OFFICERS OF THE GENERAL STAFF ON THE MARCH TOWARDS MOSCOW, COLONEL LIEDOT FELL INTO AN AMBUSH SET BY A DETACHMENT OF COSSACKS, NEAR VITEBSK. SERIOUSLY WOUNDED BY A BULLET IN THE CHEST, HE DIED OF HIS WOUNDS THE DAY AFTER THE AMBUSH. IN TRIBUTE TO THIS TALENTED ENGINEER, FORT LIÉDOT, BUILT ON THE ISLAND OF AIX IN THE CHARENTE MARITIME DEPARTMENT, BEARS HIS NAME. HE WAS ALSO DIRECTOR OF WORKS ON THE FORTIFICATIONS OF ALEXANDRIA.
