This is an exceptional pen holder in black urushi lacquer (roiro) decorated with a branch of peonies and a bird in flight. The decoration is treated with gold powder of several shades of tones, of different thicknesses (hiramakie and takamakie) and in cinnabar red and green lacquer. Some details are in silver powder. Small squares of gold mosaic and mother-of-pearl (kirikane) are sprinkled on the leaves. The articulated metal part is gilded with fine gold. This is a superb work made by one of the best lacquerers in the Namiki workshop. The artist having affixed his signature, it must be easy to know who it is in order to date the work precisely. We can find on the market, although they are rare and in high demand, old Namiki pens as well as cigarette holders or card holders but it is exceptional to come across a pen holder. The peony being the symbol of immortality, the presence of the bird must also have a meaning, which has escaped us. The underside is covered with a green felt, probably original. The Namiki workshop began its activity at the beginning of the 20th century and continues to produce exceptional pens that can be found in some prestigious French shop.
This could be a superb gift with discreet elegance.
