Of Italian origin, Félix Henri Giacomotti was naturalized French in 1849 and was a student at the Besançon drawing school. He was a student of François Edouard Picot at the Beaux Arts. He won the Prix de Rome in History painting in 1854 and went to Rome, for the Villa Medici, from 1855 to 1860. On his return, he exhibited at the Salon from 1860 to 1909. He received numerous commissions including a ceiling for the Musée du Luxembourg. He was appointed director of the municipal school of Fine Arts and curator of the Besançon Museum until his death. He mainly practiced historical painting and religious painting but also painted portraits and female nudes influenced by William Bouguereau and Alexandre Cabanel.
A monographic exhibition was held in Étampes in 2005.
