Burma, Kingdom of Mandalay, late 19th century, early 20th century, superb carved wooden Buddha. He sits on a base in the position of "taking the earth to witness" (Bhûmisparsha-Mudrà) and in an attitude of intense meditation. The serenity of the face and the half-closed eyes attest to this. This statue shows significant signs of erosion due to prolonged stays outdoors but which contribute to its beautiful aesthetic. The previous owner took care to have a base made to highlight its beauty and present it in a way that could be admired from all angles. The whole is of a high quality of execution.
