A symbol particularly rich in meaning, the snake can represent both the best and the worst of the human heart. Immortality, creation or even regeneration, it nevertheless also refers to death, evil and deception. The disturbing shape of this vase and the threatening air of the snake represented there suggest that René Lalique wanted to show the troubling side of this animal. The snake here seems to coil around a first vase, thus creating a second vase with its body. It is through a precise observation of nature, translated by technical virtuosity, that Lalique succeeded in giving his work the effect of matter that seems to make it come to life. The snake is a recurring motif in Lalique's work, and several of his pieces depict this animal. Thus, in 2010, Maison Lalique created the "Serpent" perfume bottle for the 150th anniversary of René Lalique's birth.
