André Charigny (1902-2000)
André Charigny, son of color merchants, shows from an early age a passion for drawing. He studied at the Bernard Palissy boys' school of applied arts and in 1916 won a first prize for drawing. Due to health problems, he spent several years in Normandy, which inspired him by the beauty of nature. In 1920, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and set up his studio in the 15th arrondissement.
In 1924, he discovered the Jura with the painter Robert Fernier and participated in the founding of the salon des Annonciades in Pontarlier in 1927. Charigny exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, where he won several awards including the Rosa Bonheur prize and a gold medal in 1931. In 1945, he married Antoinette Maître and moved to Besançon, continuing to exhibit regularly.
Faithful to the Salon des Annonciades throughout his life, Charigny participates in several retrospectives of his works, including at Pontarlier and the Château de Belvoir. He died in 2000, at the age of 98, after a rich career marked by scenes of life, landscapes and still lifes.
