Born in Orne, Marcel Loth moved to Périgueux at the age of 27 to open an architectural practice. Self-taught, he took up his brushes in 1943, initially working on portraits and caricatures. After the war, he began his long journey towards non-figuration, which led him to flamboyant pieces, with thick materials and deconstructed geometric figures. During his life, Loth was a friend of the discreet painter Jean Boyé from Périgord, and of the great Roger Bissière, who was a great inspiration. The painter's subjects are varied: modeled landscapes whether they are from Périgord or the Arcachon Basin, cubic urban landscapes, portraits and characters, or even the sign paintings, symbolic of his work.
Our canvas is part of the entire abstract corpus of Loth, where the play of colors and its placement is master.
