An important portrait of the 'Nine Days Queen' who was sentenced to execution at the age of 17 for high treason. Initially pardoned by Queen Mary for wrongfully taking the crown, Lady Jane Grey and her husband Lord Guildford Dudley, aged 18, after being held in the Tower of London, were beheaded on 12 February 1554. This early portrait of the young Duchess is dated 1553, possibly commissioned by her father, Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, the portrait signifying the sitter's daughter as 'Suffolk's daughter'. Presented in an antique oak frame. The work remains in good condition. The surface is stable, slight curvature on the panel. Would be further improved with a light professional cleaning.
