The scene depicted traces the salient stages of the life of the apostle Peter. The figure of the saint, sitting in a cave, his hands clasped, his meditative gaze turned upwards, seems to be thinking back to his life; next to him, at the top left, there is a rooster, a reminder of the dramatic episode recounted in the Gospels of Peter's denial of Jesus during the Passion ("Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times").
