"Large Japanese Tanuki Belly Mokugyo - Japan"
Large okimono, wooden sculpture representing a tanuki, an animal from Japanese folklore, whose belly is a mokugyo (Buddhist drum). Dressed with a jacket decorated with plants under the moon. The eyes are made of glass and the belly is hollowed out like a real mokugyo. Some scratches on the belly and a restoration at the foot. Signature engraved under the foot. Japan, circa 1910, 25 x 12 x 9 cm.
