Elegant bottle ceramic cooler called "with 4 colors", from Rouen factory, around 1720/1740
The cylindrical cooler has 2 small handles on either side in shell shape, displaying a rich decorative register framing 2 quadrilobed reserves of rural landscapes on the main faces.
The shape of this table piece is specific to the Rouen workshops and we find many similar pieces with varied decorations, showing their large series production and the success of these ceramics (Please check last photo)
Rouen production will be one of the first to succeed in particular for quality ot its red color; in fact, this color obtained from iron oxide had a tendency to turn brown during plain fire cooking and to create unsightly bubbles or craters. The full range of polychromy is quite successful and harmonious here - red, green, yellow, blue and manganese, colours obtained respectively from iron , copper, antimony, cobalt and manganese oxides powders.
The ceramic production here highlights, often in Rouen factory taste, decorative register rather than the 2 landscapes which are quite rustic: lambrequins, multicoloured leafy garlands, neat and stylised grids inherited from the creations of the famous decorator GUILLIBAUD (from whose workshops this piece may have been produced)
Condition: slight cracks on the edge, chips and enamel chips around the neck of the cooler, visible on photos.
Traces of limestone on the surface inside the piece, linked to its daily use over centuries.
A pretty blown glass bottle is attached to this ad, in order to complete our cooler and restore its primary function.
Dimensions: Diameter 25cm and height 17.5cm (for the bottle diameter 9cm and height 32cm)
