Louis-René Boulanger is directly inspired, on the motif, by the landscapes of Bugey, Dombes, and the Bresse region. His father was a portrait painter, friend of Balzac, Hugo and Alexandre Dumas. Boulanger was a student of Yon and Louis Français. After this training in Paris, he settled in Ain, created large decorations there, and settled in Bourg-en-Bresse where he became curator of the Museum.
An inspired landscape painter, he describes the fields and trees, the still waters of his region using a broad style that transfigures the most banal reality thanks to personal accents with an energetic touch (Source: Gérald Schurr , the little Masters of Painting, editions of the Amateur 1985 Paris, volume 6 page 62)
