The box is rectangular, in porcelain painted with landscapes and bouquets of flowers. The painted decoration is enhanced with characters and shells applied in silver-gilt.
These appliques feature musicians, dancers, peasants and even a vagabond holding a dog on a leash.
The mount is also in silver-gilt.
The Samson factory was created in 1845 by Edmé Samson. His son succeeded him and specialized in the reproduction of old porcelain. The factory is noted for the high quality of its production and the fidelity in the imitation of old styles.
It bears the mark with the cross under the bottom.
This snuff box is probably a production of the end of the 19th century.
The mount is hallmarked:
. Boar's head hallmark for solid silver since 1838
. Goldsmith's hallmark: ES (?) with a caduceus. Unfortunately, I have not managed to identify this goldsmith.
Magnificent box from the great Samson factory. If its production is relatively common, it is very rare to find one with a solid silver mount, especially with these astonishing silver-gilt appliques.
