The sovereign’s face is beautifully detailed, capturing both his nobility and determination. The superbly treated gold armor, and the refined ornaments, the reflections of light, testify to the care given to the details. The dark background brings out the royal figure in a solemn way.
The painting is sold with its original carved wooden frame. In excellent condition, it reinforces the valuable aspect of the work. This painting was most likely given as a gift to a member of the French nobility, rare and refined testimony of the art of court under Louis XIV, to strengthen their bond of loyalty to the monarchy and recall the greatness of the sovereign.
The work is in its juice, on its canvas and its original frame.
A little cleaning would revive the colors.
The annotation “Le Roy” is found on the back of the painting.
Frame dimensions: 56 x 46 cm
Dimensions outside the frame: 40 x 32 cm
Pierre Mignard (1612-1695) was a major 17th century French painter, famous for his court portraits of Louis XIV and religious works. Born in Troyes, he trained under Simon Vouet before spending 20 years in Italy, where he was inspired by the great masters of the Renaissance and Baroque.
Back in France, he became the favourite portrait painter of the nobility and created refined and idealised works, including portraits of the king and the royal family. In 1690, after the death of his rival Charles Le Brun, he was appointed Premier peintre du roi, working on prestigious projects at Versailles and in various churches.
Pierre Mignard died in Paris in 1695, leaving an important artistic legacy. His works, marked by classical elegance and great attention to detail, are preserved in many museums and collections around the world.
