style of Serafino De Serafini (1323-1393)
Large Antique Italian School Old Master Triptych of The Virgin & Child accompanied by two saints, oil on panel. Excellent quality and condition Modena School scene of the Madonna & Child flanked by two medieval Italian Bishops (possibly Saint Gregory The Great & Saint Benedict). Presented in a beautiful Neo-Gothic gilt carved frame. The work would be significantly enhanced by a light professional clean that we can quote for prior to shipping. Excellent provenance having been held in a single family collection since the 19th Century.
Measurements: 44" x 31.5" framed approx
Provenance: The Churchill family Estate: Sidney J. A. Churchill (1862-1921); Ruth Plant (daughter); Juliet Petty of Bristol (granddaughter).
Private Italian Collection, Napoli, Wax Seal
Sidney Churchill was a well-travelled British diplomat, connoisseur and art collector. After working for some years in India and Persia, he became British Consul first in Palermo (1898-1909) and then in Naples (1909-1912), before being promoted to Consul-General in Naples, where he remained until 1918. Given the export seal on the back of each panel, which can be approximately dated to 1907-08, it is most likely that Churchill arranged for this work to be sent back to England following his residence as a foreign diplomat.
