Mekertich Givanian was born in Constantinople in 1848. In the 1860s, he studied with the artist Abraham Sakayan. He studied at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Istanbul under the French artist Pierre Guillement. In 1874, he met the famous painter Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, whose works inspired Givanian for marinistics. From 1876 to 1879, he stayed in Italy. Upon his return to Istanbul, he married an Italian woman in 1885. In 1894, he moved to Odessa, Ukraine. Seven years later, he moved to Saint Petersburg, where he lived for four years. The artist died in 1906 in Istanbul.
