Comparative observation of the two works shows a similarity in composition, character, and decorative elements. However, the preparatory study reveals a few elements that will not be retained (a basket, coins in the background, etc.).
The woman's face is carefully executed, as is the top of the fireplace. The other elements are more summarily done, and the wood of the panel is visible in many places. The character's white headdress stands out clearly in the overall dark composition.
The work is in good condition. It has been cleaned. It is signed at the bottom left. It is offered in a gilded frame, in used condition.
The artist
Born in Sétif, Algeria in 1859 and died in Marseille in 1943, Emile Troncy lived and worked during a period of great artistic changes. His work is part of the transition between 19th century art and the modernist movements of the early 20th century. Emile Troncy is often associated with the Art Nouveau movement. His paintings focus on genre scenes, portraits and nudes. He had a particular interest in the representation of everyday life, as evidenced by the work we offer here.
