The Aiglon
In 1815, the fall of the empire and the restoration of the monarchy triumphed over the very short reign of Napoleon II, proclaimed emperor by his father Napoleon Bonaparte. The latter, through this political maneuver, had no other intentions than to maintain the continuity of his empire. Napoleon II resided the rest of his life in Austria, irremediably sidelined from French affairs and the political sphere. He died in Vienna in 1832, at the age of 21. Victor Hugo, in his poem entitled - Napoleon II - alluded to the father and son by writing this memorable phrase "England took the eagle, and Austria the eaglet". This is how his nickname of Aiglon was first mentioned, which was subsequently the subject of numerous quotes in various texts.
Edmond Rostand popularized his nickname in 1900, by creating his famous play called "L'aiglon" and in which he gave the leading role to the essential and talented Sarah Bernhardt. Titled King of Rome upon his birth, Napoleon II known as the Aiglon became, because of his tragic and short life, a romantic and inspiring character for many authors of literary works.
